Sharon Whittaker Biography
Sharon Whittaker studied at Canterbury University completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994. She is currently living in Geraldine, NZ.
Sharon has recently exhibited in the “Here and Now” exhibition at the Aigantighe Gallery in Timaru and her work is available at Susan Badcock Studio in Geraldine. Her monotypes and mixed media work is becoming recognized around NZ.
Her monotypes are small insights of scenes around South Canterbury which include, Wildflowers, Riverbeds, Crops and The Four Peaks a very significant mountain range near Geraldine. Each work has other elements of reference into personal experiences of life. The feeling or mood experienced from the landscape is important to Sharon. Some other recent works are based around family photos from 1950’s and a part of her research into family ancestry.
The technique Sharon uses is a traditional printmaking method called Monotype. This is done by painting printmaking ink onto a glass plate and laying paper on top and then hand rolling to create the image. She enjoys the element of surprise when the paper is peeled back. Once this has dried Sharon then paints an emulsion over top to give it a glossy surface.
